About Wofford Acres Vineyards

Mike, Paul and Ann purchased this beautiful property, overlooking the South Fork of the American River, in 2003. Before the previous owners planted grape vines it had been an apple orchard and now there are five acres of grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer, Merlot, Nebbiolo, Petite Sirah, Petite Verdot, Syrah and Viognier. Yes, it snows (a few inches at a time), yes, there are bears (mostly in the Fall) and mountain lions (occasionally), and yes, there are rattlesnakes (more than Ann likes). Is it a ton of work? Absolutely! Is it “living the dream”? Sometimes… mostly on summer evenings, with a glass of wine in hand…

Wines

2018
Cabernet Sauvignon
Estate - El Dorado

The 2018 vintage was great for fruit quality but cold spring weather kept the production down. The must was fermented in small ¾ ton lots with a specialty Rhone yeast “GRE”. The wine was then aged 36 months in 2/3 one year old American and 1/3 in older French oak. $57

2021 Molino De Viento
Syrah Rosé
El Dorado Estate

In 2021 the drought conditions continued but the vines bounced back from 2020’s low yields. This vintage brought us this largest crop ever at WAV. Quality was also outstanding. The fruit was hand harvested, given overnight skin contact and pressed the following day. Utilizing specialty yeast, Steinberg, to help enhance the delicate aromas, the wine was also given 4 months sur lie (aged in contact with the fermentation lees / sediment). Aging in three year old Allier French oak barrels rounds out the wine. $32

2020 Soñando Viognier
Estate - El Dorado

100% Viognier

Aromas of rose petals and lemon peel are backed by an interesting minerality. Perfumed spice and floral qualities carry throughout the flavors. The wine finishes clean and crisp with a gently oaky impression. Great for spring and summer  enjoyment, this wine will accompany all hard cheeses, lighter pasta, chicken or fish dishes. $32

2019 Posada
Port-Style

Sierra Foothills

Our 2019 Posada shows the complex aromas and smooth textures that have become the benchmark of WAV's Port-style Posada. Abundant aromas of plum, orange peel, cinnamon, allspice and chocolate all interplay. The rich texture carries the flavors to a long lingering finish. While Tim Spencer liked to pair his ports with frozen Snickers bars, I think that you should enjoy Wofford Acres Posada any way you please. $37

Redbird Canyon
California
Red Blend

Raspberry, violets and spice spring from the glass. Moderately full bodied yet supple in finish, this is a great wine to enjoy with any fare. $30

2018 "Bearly There"
Estate - El Dorado

70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petite Verdot

A dark purple and magenta color leads to deep aromas of ripe plum and new leather with hints of chocolate. Ripe red fruit impressions in the mouth are extended by a rich and full finish. The wine is firm in tannins and finishes with lingering blackberry and sweet oak. This wine tastes great right now and will add to any rich cuisine or BBQ fare, with proper storage should age gracefully for another three years. $52

2020 LaMancha
Estate - El Dorado

With our 2020 Vintage deep magenta hues in color lead to impressions of cranberry, plum and violets.. Enticing flavors of berries and a hint of chocolate expand the mid pallet. Firm tannins extend the slightly smoky finish.
A big wine, with loads of fruit, the LaMancha goes well with many foods and is great for barbeque. $42

Cider

South Fork Hard Cider
(Methode Champenoise) Juice from Rainbow Orchards

Luscious apple aromas entice the taster to a crisp dry cider. The slight spritz highlights green apple tartness with delicate Fuji apple perfume. Bright and refreshing this cider is thoroughly enjoyable as a summer quaff or a great accompaniment to any lighter fare. $20

Meet Our Team

Paul

Paul

After making gold medal winning wines for 29 harvests winemaker Paul Wofford moved to Camino in 2003 to start Wofford Acres Vineyards with wife Ann and brother Mike. At the California State Fair, Wofford Acres Vineyards has received the "Best Red Blend for the Sierra Foothill Region" and gold medals for their unique LaMancha Red Blend because of Paul's expertise. Paul's winemaking experience began with a B.S. Degree in Geology and then graduate studies in Enology at Fresno State University. He then continued on in the cellars at Clos du Val and Zaca Mesa. His years as the winemaker for Martin Ray and Bargetto Winery have made his name synonymous with creating excellent wines..

Kristina

Kristina

Kristina showed up at WAV 10 years ago, and she hasn’t left. Kristina has become Paul’s apprentice, and her real love is helping in the vineyard. She is also the official foot-stomper for the Aldonza and self-appointed Sale Room Manager. She loves the ciders, and trying new wines, but she always has a place in her heart for the LaMancha. Kristina lives in Camino with her 4-legged best friend Frankie and her two cats.

Ann

Ann

Ann’s childhood memories of her dad making wine called “La Mancha Red” with his fellow “garagistes” led to the naming of WAV’s flagship wine. A proud East Coaster and NJ native, she has lived in CA since 1986; she came to the West Coast to visit a friend, and stayed after meeting Paul. Her favorite grape is Gewurztraminer, and when she isn’t doing winery work she reads and does NYT crossword puzzles in ink.

Kathy

Kathy

Kathy and Ann met when their kids were in kindergarten together, and bonded over wine when the kids had to stay home with chickenpox… They have been BFFs ever since, so when Kathy moved to El Dorado County shortly after WAV was purchased she was the perfect person to help out in the Sales Room. Her favorite wine remains the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, and every year she asks Paul why he can’t make it again…

Mike

Mike

Mike became involved in wine because of his brother, Paul. Over the years, he has helped Paul with different aspects of the wine making process, especially the consumption of his fine wines. Mike found our property in 2002 and WAV opened their doors October 2003. He likes to say the purchase was “lock, stock and barrel” because there were grapes on the vine ready to harvest, wine in barrels and bottled wine ready to sell.
Mike handles the financial aspects of the winery, vineyard work, and tasting and sales. He is usually the one serving at fundraisers in the Sacramento area but also pours in Placerville and South Lake Tahoe. Mike is very proud that WAV helps our local communities as much as possible, and especially proud of the October weekend fundraiser when donations go to organizations helping Cancer patients.

Sarah

Sarah

After several years as a WAV VIP Sarah showed up on a day WAV was short-handed, and landed behind the counter pouring the wines she knew so well. She is now a regular face at WAV, picking grapes as well as helping with the Fall crowds. Sarah juggles her time at WAV with three children and her own school schedule studying for a bachelor’s in Clinical Nutrition- ask her about vegan pairings with the wines!
